Community Volunteer Awards

Pender Harbour thrives on volunteer efforts. These awards recognize the value of volunteers and honor those who have significantly improved our community. We thank the Rotary Club of Pender Harbour for their generous sponsorship.

Award Categories:

1. Lifetime Achievement
2. Volunteer of the Year
3. Youth Volunteer

Eligibility:

– Open to Area A residents
– You cannot nominate yourself, deceased individuals, current elected politicians, or paid service providers

Award Criteria:

Lifetime Achievement
& Volunteer of the Year:
– Exemplifies community service spirit
– Shows leadership and acts as a role model
– Demonstrates vision, initiative, and creativity
– Makes a significant difference
– Respected for contributions
– 10+ years of volunteer history

Youth Volunteer (under 30 years):
– Active community service participation
– Demonstrates leadership and passion
– Encourages others’ development
– Makes a positive impact

The Nomination Process:

1. Provide your contact information
2. Specify the nominee and award category
3. Explain the reason for the nomination

 Lifetime Achievement Award: Rose-Marie Everett
– Exceptional PHARA director
– Awarded posthumously in early 2021

2019 Awards

Volunteer of the Year: Brenda Scoular
– Led restoration of Forest View Cemetery
– Raised funds, organized volunteers
– Directed over 400 hours of volunteer work

Lifetime Volunteer Award: Muriel Cameron
– Pender Harbour pioneer
– 50+ years with Pender Harbour Community Club
– Ran Bargain Barn for 30+ years
– Inspired many community volunteers
– Received Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012

Lifetime Volunteer Award: Billy Griffith
– Lifelong Egmont resident and commercial fisherman
– Volunteered for salmon enhancement
– Founding member of Egmont Lions Club
– Served on various boards including Health Centre Society and Wildlife Society
– President of Skookumchuck Heritage Society since 1994
– Helped build Egmont Heritage Centre in 2005

2017 Awards

Volunteer of the Year: Bill Gilkes
– Deputy Fire Chief, Pender Harbour Fire Department
– Led dangerous rescue operation
– Mentors younger firefighters
– Volunteers for community events

Lifetime Achievement Award: Doreen Lee
– Co-founded key cultural institutions
– Helped establish first community library
– Founding member of Health Centre Board
– Co-founder of Bargain Barn thrift store

Lifetime Achievement Award: Barrie Wilbee
– Long-serving Fire Protection District Board chair
– Involved in numerous community organizations and committees
– Founded Sunshine Coast Economic Development Commission
– Board member of Sunshine Coast Community Foundation
– Honored with named scholarship for community economic development

Important Notes:

– Next nomination deadline to be announced in 2024
– Previous unsuccessful nominations may be considered in future years
– Awards may not be presented in all categories every year
– Selection committee includes PHARA board members and Rotary Club representatives
